Dr. Rowley must justify his wife’s attendance to CHOGM
Having Represented this great nation at the past three Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting as Youth Representative one would note that although Heads of state are allowed to carry their spouses, it’s a precendent or practice seldom undertaken by most of those attending CHOGM. This is as a result of the very tight and hectic schedule for the leaders attending this very high-level meeting.
There are a number of Gala events as well as Forums and workshops designed for Female Participants , but are usually reserved for females representing a specific Governmental Agenda or Development Framework.
Therefore being the first Prime Minister of our Republic to have their spouse attend CHOGM with them, the Prime Minister must disclose to Taxpayers the capacity in which Mrs.Rowley is attending and give a detailed rational to our citizens.
Although there are no restrictions on the spouse of a Prime Minister escorting them on official business, it however gives a double standard to the present Government who were critical of the former administration’s travel bill. Such an action may also appear to be highly inappropriate and disrespectful to the people of Trinidad and Tobago at this time given our nation’s economy which witnessed an increase in local travelling fares due to increases in the price of fuel.
The Honourable Prime Minister besides clearing the air on his wife’s attendance should also select the best possible delegation with the correct skill set and experience to adequately represent our nation at CHOGM. This delegation must have the relevant knowledge on the post 2015 agenda especially as it relates to Youth and Gender which is carded to be one of the main discussion points at the upcoming meeting of Commonwealth world leaders.
Yours in Service
