UNC welcomes new female Mayor of Chaguanas
The United National Congress extends warm congratulations to newly appointed Mayor of Chaguanas Her Worship Councillor Vandana Mohit.
Ms Mohit, UNC Councillor for Cunupia, was elected at the first meeting of the Borough Corporation’s Council, following the swearing in of new Aldermen on Tuesday 17th December, 2019.
Bright, dynamic and driven, Ms Mohit represents the next generation of our nation’s leaders. We have every confidence that she will do Chaguanas as well as the United National Congress proud.
Ms Mohit was re-elected for a third term as Councillor in the December 2nd Local Government Election, with a track record of performance and delivery to burgesses. She plans to continue to work to fulfill the UNC’s vision for the Borough, as well as the entire nation.
“I am humbled and honoured, and I am ready to work with the Council to implement programmes and initiatives that will benefit the people of the Borough,” Ms. Mohit said.
“The PNM has failed the people of Chaguanas and across the country,” she noted. “Over the last few months we have been going into the communities to hear the concerns of the people, and we are ready to work with them to implement solutions to their problems. The UNC is ready to return good governance to our country.”
Mr Faaiq Mohammed, UNC Councillor for Charlieville, was appointed Deputy Mayor, a position in which he served over the period 2016-2019.
The swearing in of aldermen and election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor was delayed for over two and a half hours, as the PNM Aldermen failed to show at the scheduled time.

Mayor of Chaguanas
Vandana Mohit is a twenty-eight-year-old resident of Cunupia and a two-term councillor for the electoral district of Cunupia. She was re-elected to serve as councillor in the 2019 Local Government Elections.
Vandana attended the Endeavour Hindu School followed by Saraswati Girls’ Hindu College where she graduated as the valedictorian and received the Good Citizenship Award. She pursued Tertiary Level Education at the College of Science and Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) where she pursued an Associate Degree in Journalism/Public Relations and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication both of which she graduated.
At the age of twenty-two Vandana made a life-changing decision to enter politics, being elected as the Local Government Representative/Councillor for the Electoral District of Cunupia where she has served as Councillor since 2013.
Vandana has worked on projects such as Happy Hands and Feet, Youth Empowerment and Sports and Cultural Development. She gained valuable experience when she was selected to attend the ‘Youth Leadership for Developing Countries’ Seminar in China, ‘‘Management of Rural Employment Projects and Poverty Alleviation’ in India and ‘Countering Violence Extremism Exchange’ in Washington D.C.
Faaiq Mohammed
Deputy Mayor of Chaguanas
Faaiq Mohammed has served as the Councillor for Charlieville for 6 years and was re-elected in the December 2nd 2019 Local Government Election. He has served his burgesses as the Deputy Mayor of Chaguanas.
Faaiq was born and raised in Charlieville and has deep roots in the community. He is an active member of the masjid and is very involved with all religious organizations to ensure that they are successful in their ventures. He is active in playing and promoting sports and youth development in the area. Faaiq is also a business owner in the Charlieville area.
Faaiq’s goals as a Councillor are to provide the best service that the Chaguanas borough has to offer and the best representation to the community. He does this through continuous lobbying in council meetings and with central government.
