UNC: Kublalsingh’s actions have unmasked his hypocrisy
WAYNE Kublalsingh is using environment activism as a front for what is now a clearly prejudiced and partisan political agenda, United National Congress Acting Chairman, Khadijah Ameen has said.
In a media statement yesterday (Monday), the UNC Acting Chairman said: “Dr Kublalsingh has realised that his stance against the Debe to Mon Desir section of the south highway project is not getting public support. And what he is now doing is trying to disenfranchise and deny hundreds of thousands of citizens of the benefit of the highway, because of what is clearly his own political agenda.”
Ameen added: “I want to be clear that the UNC has no problem with anyone having a political agenda, but to use environment advocacy as a front for that agenda amounts to an attempt to prevent our citizens from benefitting from enhanced infrastructure because of the personal prejudice of one person. And that is something the UNC will not support.”
Ameen was responding to calls by Kublalsingh to all Opposition groups to “join his struggle”.
She said: “Having failed to convince the public of his position against the highway, he is now trying to incite what he calls ‘Opposition forces’ against just about any and everything that has ever made him unhappy. He doesn’t even seem to be clear anymore on what he is fighting.”
“So he is basically saying that he has no interest in the progress made by the People’s Partnership Government, or in the many ways that citizens have benefitted from such progress. He is in effect saying that what he wants is more important than the majority of people. The UNC rejects any such thinking.”
The Acting UNC Chairman added: “What started off as environment advocacy has now become a political stand. Dr Kublalsingh’s actions have unmasked the great hypocrisy of publicity stunts in what he claimed was a serious issue of the environment. He has even gone so far as to suggest that people read about the life of Gandhi. But perhaps Dr Kublalsingh must be reminded that Gandhi had an honourable mission with absolutely no hidden agenda. ”
She added: “We therefore urge all citizens to stay focused on the People’s Partnership’s mission to improve the quality of life for all people, regardless of where they live. The people must not allow themselves to be fooled by publicity stunts and underhanded machinations of someone who is using the environment as a disguise for his political agenda.”
