UNC Chairman Concerned about Govt’s Modus operandi of ‘Suppression’
As Chairman of the United National Congress I am greatly saddened by the current modus operandi of ‘Suppression’ being practiced by the current administration.
Events stemming from Policy Direction to Legislation as well as the provision of key services to the Population have been undertaken in a manner so as to suppress the rights, welfare, growth and standard of living of our national population.
It is quite unfortunate that the future of our nation; our children have been drawn into this Political atrocity by the Government as they are facing first-hand experience of poor Policy Direction through the uncertainty of the Text Book program, Possible removal of Gate in its current incarnation, total removal of the laptop program as well as a number of schools to be reconstructed have been left incomplete.
Across the globe falling energy prices have made the domestic and regional economic situation bleak, however the current Government has implemented measures which have not sought to cushion these effects but rather enhance the negative repercussions of tough economic times to the detriment of the working class. Testament to this fact has been the persistent hemorrhage of workers, the non-payment to contractors coupled with many state institutions being under funded.
Government’s Policy has greatly impacted the social fabric of our nation as many programs aimed at assisting the most vulnerable in our society have been halted. At present over 11,000 food card users are without this essential service while thousands are paying more for food items caused by the change to the VAT Regime. It’s a sad juncture in our nation’s history when each week groups of patients and elderly individuals are complaining about medication shortages at our hospitals.
Government’s current management of the economy has been quite questionable as there continues to be a prolonged unaddressed forex shortage, fuel prices have increased twice within 8 months, contraction of growth as well as the absence of a clear plan for diversification or weathering the economic storm despite the appointment of bodies such as the Economic Advisory Board and National Tripartite Committee.
It is quite bewildering how a nation that was moving forward due to a rapid rate of people centered development has plummeted into a zone of stagnation in only 8 months. Citizens are now being told statements such as “they have no right to privacy” while legislation which violates some of their constitutional rights are being forced upon them. The Conditions of progress have remarkably transformed to those synonymous to States where democracy is a dream but not a reality.
One must therefore question these actions of ‘Suppression’ by the present administration. Is this a political ploy to stifle and break the social fabric of the country and subsequently repair it to appear as Political heroes or is this simply a lack of vision, determination and goodwill on the part of the Government.
