UNC Chairman calls on Point Fortin Mayor to resign, leaders to ensure Gender Equality
As Chairman of the UNC I call on his Worship Clyde Paul Mayor of Point Fortin to undertake the same moral actions as Raymond Tim Kee and tender his resignation in light of his very insensitive and condescending comments over the murder of Asami Nagakiya.
Mayor Clyde referred to those who protested as hypocrites while also suggesting that when the facts of the murder is revealed the nation will be shocked and alarmed. It is very insulting for one who holds any leadership position to criticise members of the Public for undertaking and practicing their civil right. The actions of these citizens were further vindicated when Prime Minister Rowley today in a press conference admitted the statements of Tim Kee were in poor taste and welcomed the actions being taken.
We live in a global community where the fight for gender equality and protection of women remain a top priority, therefore it is quite bewildering that an individual in a position of leadership will seek to make such sexist and insulting statements which threaten the very fabric of equality and national development.
These actions of Clyde Paul can be described as a misuse of Public Office as he has used his office not only to cast aspersions without basis but as a leader has failed to undertake the role of protecting the rights and liberty of each citizen, especially our women through his callous statements.
Clyde Paul should therefore do the Honourable act and step down as Mayor.
However this issue extends further than Mayors Paul and Tim Kee, this is an issue to ensure that all men in leadership roles continue to undertake actions that ensure gender equality, gender promotion and protection of our women.
As Chairman of the UNC I give my commitment to ensure as a party we fight for a nation and society that respects and upholds the rights of our women.
