Over the last week, this country was host to the some of the most senior people in Central Banking in the world. This country hosted the Alliance for Financial Inclusion 2014 Global Policy Forum. It’s theme of “Global Partnership, National Goals, Empowering People” spoke to the global nature of this event, and its altruistic goals. Central Bank Governors, key decision makers and financiers enjoyed the hospitality of our twin island state.
Globally, there are over 2.5 billion people-more than half of world’s adult population-who do not have access to the banking system. As such, many of world population may not have access to service that we take for granted. Being excluded from the financial sector almost most certainly dooms one to the vicious cycle of poverty. Empowering people to escape this cycle trough education and access to services is needed more than ever, given all the financial upheavals in the world. Our country being a part of this augurs well for our future.
I was present for parts of this forum, and it was a great show. Comments from the global attendees about the forum and the country was extremely positive. The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago should be commended for hosting this event, and taking the lead in representing our country admirably.
