Senator Maharaj Attends World Food Security Committee
October 14th, 2014: On the heels of the annual international observation of World Food Day on October 16th Senator the Honourable Devant Maharaj is currently in attendance at the Forty First Session of the Committee on World Food Security in Rome, Italy.
The Committee on World Food Security has the overall goal of zero hunger. Significant strides have been made in the quest to end hunger globally. It is estimated that about 805 million people are chronically undernourished, 209 million less than in 1990–92. Still the MDG-1 hunger target remains realistically within reach as 63 countries have already met it.
At the aforementioned Session which commenced on Monday 13th October, 2014, key policy decisions will be targeted including:
• Approval of the Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems
• Discussion of measures to address food losses and waste, and the role of fisheries and aquaculture in food security and nutrition.
• Approval of the Framework for Action on Addressing Food Insecurity in Protracted Crises.
Additionally, FAO stands ready to technically support the next steps of this process, especially implementation at the national level. The Ministry of Food Production is pleased to remind our citizens of our efforts to create a food secure nation. The National Food Production Action Plan 2012- 2015 is the policy framework in which the Ministry aims to increase food production in key commodities of economic viability and great nutritious value.
