Prime Minister’s Easter Message
I welcome this opportunity to greet the citizens of our nation as we, together, observe Easter. This is the most important celebration in the Christian calendar commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And as has been our tradition in Trinidad & Tobago, all citizens, of all faiths, stand together in the spirit of unity.
With the teachings of mercy and forgiveness, it is the celebration of the coming of the son of God, to save the world from evil and malice.
Easter therefore brings us an opportunity for reflection and a rekindling of the values by which we must live our lives as a community of men, women and children, equal in the eyes of God and in the eyes of the State.
It brings the joy of the resurrection of the living Christ, and reminds citizens how they may use his sacrifice to renew their faith and improve their lives.
As the time of fasting and introspection ends, it is important for each of us to look deeply at the lives we live, the habits we have allowed to grow and the values we may have, at one time or another, allowed to slip away.
The faults in ourselves that we find must serve, not to make us daunted at having fallen short, but rather to encourage us to believe that despite our human weaknesses, we can aspire to forgiveness, rebirth and a new focus on living in a manner that is good and right in the eyes of God.
It is my hope that all of us together can rise above the challenges, mistakes and excuses, and join hands, whatever our faith, to build lives where we can translate our words to action, lives where we not only speak of mercy and forgiveness, but also practice it.
As one people, in one nation, it is for us to find our faults, and it is for us to dedicate our energies to doing better and working harder.
The past that we have together emerged from is there to teach us, the present gives us the opportunity to do better, and the future is there for us all to share if we stand together, worship together, and work together.
On behalf of my family, I wish you all a Happy and Holy Easter celebration. And especially to the children and young people of our nation, I urge you to make every attempt to appreciate this celebration and wish you God’s Blessings for your continued safety and protection.
