Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar extends condolences on the passing of Mr. Alloy Lequay
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, S.C. has expressed her condolences to the family of Mr. Alloy Lequay, statesman and sport administrator, who passed away today (Sunday) at the age of 90.
“Trinidad and Tobago bids farewell to one of our truest sons of the soil. Mr. Lequay dedicated his entire life to service, serving not only his country but the region.” The Prime Minister also highlighted Mr. Lequay’s tenure of service which lasted over six decades.
“It is a real inspiration to have witnessed someone give his very best and then give even more. Mr. Lequay personified selflessness and service, he was an illustration of hard work and dedication and his legacy will continue to motivate us all.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. May his soul rest in peace,” Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said.
Mr. Lequay served the country in the political arena. In 1960, he served as Secretary of the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP). He also contested two elections with the DLP and was elected a Member of Parliament for Naparima South six years later, in 1966.
Mr. Lequay also served as the Leader of Government Business in the Senate from 1986 to 1991, while the National Alliance for Reconstruction was in office.
Moreover, Mr. Lequay was an invaluable contributor to the sporting fraternity, particularly the development of cricket in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean. He was inducted into the First Citizens’ Sports Foundation Sports Hall of Fame in the category of administrators in 2004 and also received an honorary doctorate (LLB) by the University of the West Indies in 2012 in recognition of his service to sport.
He is recognised as one of our nation’s 50 Sporting Legends and received dozens of awards throughout the years.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said, “In 2012, before receiving his honorary degree, Mr. Lequay stated that he always tried to perform his national duties with dignity and humility. Today I am honoured to say that he did so in every respect. May we all follow his enduring example.”
