PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar participates in III CELAC Summit
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, will join heads of State and Government officials from 33 countries in the region at the Third Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), set to begin today and ending tomorrow in San José, Costa Rica.
The theme of the III CELAC Summit is “Building Together,” and will focus on the fight against poverty with an emphasis on transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption. Also high on the agenda is the future of CELAC activities, the regional integration of CELAC, and its role in the international community.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar is expected to highlight the progress made by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in poverty reduction, and in the fight against crime and corruption.
CELAC, which unites 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, was launched in Venezuela in 2011 when representatives of each country signed the Declaration of Caracas.
The CELAC member nations are: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Granada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Kitts and Nevis, Santa Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.
