PM calls on religious leaders to save hunger striker
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has asked members of the Inter Religious Organisation (IRO) to intervene and save the life of environmentalist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh.
Today, IRO president Haripersad Maharaj and other IRO members will meet with Kublalsingh at noon outside the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, where they will attempt to urge him to not end his life in protest.
Kublalsingh enters day 24 of his second hunger strike today outside the Prime Minister’s office.
Persad-Bissessar clearly has no intention of acceding to Kublalsingh’s request to stop construction of the highway but out of concern for his life met with the IRO with the hope that some spiritual guidance would change his position.
Speaking following the meeting with the IRO members which included Rev Albon Dean Daniel, Haji Yacoob Ali, Archbishop Harris, Barbara Burke, Sat Maharaj and others, the Prime Minister said the meeting was not to discuss the highway project but to find ways to save Kublalsingh’s life.
“This meeting as I indicated to members was not to deal with the project of the highway or policy decisions, but to deal with what I’m very concerned about, the sanctity of human life, and therefore I ask the religious leaders if they can in any way assist to help save the life of Dr Kublalsingh who seems intent on self-imposed deprivation,” said Persad-Bissessar.
IRO head Maharaj said it was agreed ten IRO members would visit Kublalsingh at his home yesterday evening “with the hope we can speak to him, we can share with him, about the importance of the alternatives to what he’s doing”.
He said the IRO will also continue to pray for Kublalsingh…READ MORE
