Padarath: Rowely has abandoned the country
Princes Town MP Barry Padarath has slammed Prime Minister Keith Rowley for choosing to travel to New York while the country is experiencing a severe weather system without giving any assurances or specifics that the government has things in place to deal with the situation.
Padarath stated that once again the Prime Minister has abandoned the people of the country at a time when action oriented leadership is required. The MP noted that this is a habit of the Prime Minister, to absent himself from situations that requite his involvement as it relates to natural disasters including severe flooding throughout the nation. On the last occasion, the country was faced with a tropical storm the Prime Minister had to be “smoked out” before he made any public utterances or appearances on the issue.
The MP indicated that throughout the country there are reports of flooding, yet the only response from the government is that they are monitoring the situation. Very little information on specific measures to bring relief to citizens has been forthcoming.
Padarath stated that the Prime Minister’s travel at this time has essentially said to the population “to hell with you, fend for yourselves”. On the last two occasions the country experienced massive flooding, we witnessed a lack of preparation and follow up action by the state to mitigate the effects. Up to today many persons still have not received grants or any form of compensation and here we are again facing another disaster. Despite complaints from regional corporations about the lack of funding many watercourses have not been cleaned or desilted. The government has not changed or improved on any of the response mechanisms that failed many people in the last set of floods to affect the country.
