One Strike and you’re out
The Editor:
For far too long, criminals in Trinidad and Tobago see no true justice for the heinous crimes that they commit. As a result, our country has been riddles with criminal activities such as have never seen before. The way our country has been governed in the 80’s and 90’s lead to this system that we have today. People are killing each other as if they were animals is very disheartening.
We have reached a point were harsher penalties are required upon conviction of any crime. The honourable Attorney General Mr.Ramlogan announced that a number of laws are to be amended to deal with the crime scourge. Among them are the Bail Act; the Act to provide for the Death Penalty and the Jury Act. Those who have been arrested, charged and convicted of gun crimes, gang crimes and violent crimes within the last ten years and are charged again would be denied bail.
Regarding the Bail Act, the three strikes and two strikes rule with respect to the denial of bail did not prove to be as effective, therefore, with one strike and you’re out will definitely be more effective since crime detection is not very high and criminals think that they can commit crime and get away all the time. It will now force them to think twice before they act. Well done Mr. AG.
