Official Launch of Rapid Response Unit
Today, the Ministry of National Security together with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) officially launches the Rapid Response Unit (RRU). The RRU is a new crime-fighting measure that will assist law enforcement. It is geared towards a more timely and effective response to citizens’ needs. The RRU has been in operation since December 1st 2013 in Trinidad and will be fully operational in Tobago by March 2014.
· The RRU co-operates with the Community Comfort Patrol (CCP), a unit operated by Private Security Officers under the authority of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, within the architecture of the Private Security Network.
· Both the RRU and the CCP operate on a 24/07 basis in all communities. It is expected that the RRU, the CCP and the integrated coordination of the TTPS and NOC will unquestionably contribute to a meaningful decrease in ongoing crime statistics.
· The Rapid Response Unit is based on the fundamental concept of police patrol. It will provide:
o Immediate availability to respond to emergencies.
o Reasonable response times even to non-emergencies.
o Some level of visibility to afford a general feeling of security.
· To ensure that the RRU is able to fulfill its mandate, it has been provided with the following:
o An effectively managed and properly equipped fleet of patrol vehicles.
o Specially selected personnel to staff the Unit.
o Highly trained and dedicated cadre of patrol officers.
o Evidence-based and intelligence-driven allocation and deployment of
o patrol units.
o Standard response times in keeping with international best practices.
o Utilization of GPS technology to facilitate computer-aided dispatch
o (CAD) and automatic vehicle locator (AVL).
