Mother’s Day Greetings from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar
Fellow citizens, today marks a very special commemoration on our calendar of observances. On behalf of my family, the government and on my own behalf, I recognize, celebrate and express my sincere gratitude to all the mothers of Trinidad and Tobago.
For most of us, it is the woman whom we call or consider to be our mother who has contributed to the person we are today. Her love, wisdom, guidance and sacrifices have enabled us to weather the many storms and overcome the various challenges we have encountered along life’s journey. She has shaped our character and given life to our dreams, goals and aspirations.
In Trinidad and Tobago. we are well aware that many of our mothers face the joys and trials of motherhood without significant male support. In this regard my government has put in place many initiatives to reduce the burden of care encountered by many of our mothers particularly our new, young mothers.
Our most recent programme, the Baby Care Assistance Grant, lends assistance to mothers for the care of their newborns. This grant along with our parenting programmes; skills training opportunities; the TT Card, which facilitates the purchase of essential food items and our soon to be established Women’s Centres provide much needed interventions for the mothers and women of Trinidad and Tobago.
Today, as we fondly recall our own personal memories of our mother, let us also pay tribute to all the mothers who have worked at the forefront to shape our nation; those who work quietly in the background shaping and supporting the ideals of their children and the many others who work tirelessly everyday to keep their families together, nurture their children and protect their communities.
To the mothers; grandmothers; stepmothers; sisters, aunts and fathers who also take on the role of mother, I salute your strength, your innovativeness, your selflessness. For all that you have given to us, I thank you.”
