Lights for Mulchan Seuchan Recreation Ground
The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) officially marked installation of $945,357.00 in lighting at the Mulchan Seuchan Recreation Ground, Waterloo, Carapichaima on Wednesday.
The lights were installed under T&TEC’s Public Lighting Programme and mark the 19th ground to be illuminated in 2013 and a total of 190 grounds since commencement of the programme in 2005; approximately 80 of which were completed by the People’s Partnership Government.
T&TEC Chairman, Mrs. Susilla Ramkissoon-Mark said that through initiatives such as this, the company was “helping to build this nation, one community at a time”.
Member of Parliament for Couva North, the Honourable Ramona Ramdial said her “most important goal as MP is to develop fully all the communities of Couva North.”
“In providing basic infrastructure and amenities, the quality of lives of constituents will be improved. The lighting-up of Mulchan Seuchan grounds will now enhance the lives of the youths especially since night sports will be introduced”, she added. Ramdial urged residents to also be proactive by taking responsibility for and ensuring upkeep of the grounds and lights.
The feature address by Minister of Public Utilities, the Honourable Nizam Baksh was delivered by his Technical Advisor, Mr. Terrance Jurawan. Jurawan conveyed Baksh’s sentiments of “pleasure in delivering these long-awaited lights to the residents of Waterloo and neighbouring communities”. He recalled the attempted kidnapping of four-year old Suri Sookdeo in June of 2012 and the calls from the community for lighting on that ground.
“These lights will serve as a deterrent to those among us who may wish to engage in illegal activity. You see, criminals are cowards who prey on the weak and defenseless under the cover of darkness. It is my hope that with these lights, you will be able to use these grounds late into the evening and early in the morning in relative safety and with peace of mind”, wrote Baksh.
Baksh congratulated MP Ramdial on the completion of the landmark project and pledged his continued support as she seeks to serve her constituents.
The commissioning ceremony ended with a cricket match between local teams Perseverance United 1 and Perseverance United 2.
