The Law Association of Trinidad & Tobago (LATT) has strongly condemned the alleged abuse and vilification of DCP Mervyn Richardson and his wife at a supermarket in east Trinidad on 31st May 2013 by a group of shoppers.
According to reports, the incident happened as DCP Richardson and his wife were shopping at a supermarket in D’Abadie on May 31st.
Supermarket customers, on recognising Mr. Richardson, began using obscene language and accused him of picking on Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley and taking sides in the Section 34 email probe. Mr. Richardson and his wife later left the supermarket and did their shopping elsewhere.
In a statement on the matter, the Law Association said it is “both illegal and unacceptable for anyone to threaten any person, let alone a senior police officer who has been assigned to investigate the disclosure of alleged infractions of the law in Parliament by a Member of Parliament.”
LATT President Senior Counsel Seenath Jairam stated: “We must cherish our democracy and the rule of law, which we sometimes take for granted but which comes at an incalculable and tremendous cost of human suffering, abuse and the ultimate sacrifice in many other nations. We must respect and strive to preserve the rule of the law.”
