Kamla refutes candidates list, no candidates has been selected or de-selected
I wish to publicly refute recent media reports with respect to the selection of candidates of United National Congress (UNC) for forthcoming national elections.
The reports indicated that, based “on the advice of caucus members”, I am “changing the faces” of certain incumbent Members of Parliament.
I strenuously deny such reports.
No advice has been sought from caucus members and none has been received about the composition of the UNC’s electoral team.
Further, no candidates has been selected or de-selected.
UNC is a democratic, people-centred organisation, with institutionalised processes and structures.
These would be properly adhered to as the party prepares for the upcoming critical elections.
I have stated that the candidate selection process will soon be initiated for the Local Government election.
This procedure will be duly followed by a similar process for selection of candidates for the general election.
These measures would be undertaken in keeping with the UNC’s institutionalised and acknowledged democratic system.
The party is currently undertaking an extensive consultation exercise with Members of Parliament and Senators, aimed at building consensus on policy and other vital issues in preparation for a resumption of national office.
The UNC appreciates the current deplorable state of national governance and the population’s earnest pleas for an urgent and dramatic improvement in the quality of their lives.
As a result, the organisation is harnessing its human and other resources so as to be fully prepared to effect positive and measurable change in the quickest possible time.
I wish to reiterate that no arbitrary decisions have been taken with respect to the selection of election candidates, and that the UNC will strictly adhere to its accepted systems and conventions.
I will keep the UNC family and the national community fully apprised on relevant matters with respect to preparation for the local government and general elections.
