Kamla Demands Compensation for Families of Slain Police Officers
PAY the million-dollar compensation to the families of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and do it as a matter of urgency.
This is the call from Leader of the Opposition, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, speaking on Parliament Friday.
Persad-Bissessar was at the time leading off the debate on the Government’s Mid-Year Review of the 2016 budget.
“You came here talking about the importance to have tough measures to fight crime, yet the variation to National Security was $40,000, while over $400 million was varied to move the OJT to the Ministry of Labour.”
“And while you talk about the previous Government, that is no excuse for failing to compensate the families of Police Officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.”
The former Prime Minister stated: “You claim crisis and no money, yet you could have found millions to pay for paintings? You can find money to purchase a new luxury vehicle? But you can’t try to empathize with the agony and sadness of these families by giving them the financial compensation they deserve?”
“The money must be paid and it must be paid immediately; you can do that by taking a Note to Cabinet for approval so there can be no excuse for delays,” Persad-Bissessar said.
