Kamla: Commission of Enquiry for Point Fortin Highway just a distraction
The Keith Rowley-led Government has once again resorted to attempts at distracting from the serious issues facing our country, as well as from their incompetence, mismanagement and inability to govern.
It is no surprise that the move to appoint a Commission of Enquiry into land acquisition comes within days of the alarming news that international rating agency Standard & Poor’s Global (S&P) downgraded Trinidad and Tobago’s investment credit rating from ‘BBB+ to “BBB’ – one level above junk status.
This downgrade is an indictment on the failed economic policies of the Rowley government, and exposes the blatant lie told to the public about an “economic turnaround.”
At this time, the Government should be putting the people of Trinidad and Tobago first and conduct an urgent review of its failed economic and fiscal policies. Instead, they have chosen to play politics and a game of distraction. It appears that Rowley’s strategy is to pretend everything is going well and then try to convince people that his Government is working, but this does not sit well with the citizens of this country.
In its report, S&P outlined key governmental failings that require immediate attention, such as the inability to provide reliable and current economic data, the failure to strengthen revenue collection institutions as well as failing to adopt policies to stimulate economic growth.
This report begs the question, what exactly has the Keith Rowley Government been doing for the past four years?
It is appalling that when the Rowley government should be fully focused on improving our economic conditions, improving our health facilities which are lacking medicines and equipment and assisting our citizens who are struggling to make ends meet, they are moving to spend millions of taxpayers’ dollars in a public relations gimmick.
There are several matters that do warrant further investigation for possible corrupt practices and/or misconduct in public office, and we call on the Government to act on these, including the multi-million dollar rental contracts for the family of the Attorney General, the A&V Drilling “fake oil” scandal, and the report of weapons in the hands of children of a Government official.
Dr Keith Rowley has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is unfit to lead, and his Government is incapable of governing our country.
