ILP candidate held with gun, ammo
A 38-YEAR-OLD man of Coconut Drive in Morvant who was presented on Sunday as one of the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) candidates for the October 21 Local Government election, was detained yesterday by police after he was found with a semi-automatic pistol and ammunition.
According to a police report, officers from the North Eastern Division Task Force led by Inspector Roger Alexander received a tip-off that a man in a white panel van which was proceeding along Lady Young Road, Morvant was in possession of an illegal firearm, following a shooting incident in the Central Division.
It was reported to police earlier, the man in question had fired a shot at a woman before fleeing. Acting on the tip-off, Insp Alexander and a party of officers placed themselves at strategic positions along Lady Young Road and at about 6.45 pm yesterday, intercepted the panel van.
When they searched the man, who was the lone occupant in the vehicle, the officers found and seized a Beretta pistol loaded with five rounds of ammunition. The man was taken to the Morvant Police station where he was detained and up to press time, was still being questioned by police. He is expected to be handed over to officers of the Central Division last night with respect to investigations into the shooting at the woman.
Police sources said the ILP candidate faces several criminal charges including illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
