Farmers get their first ‘friendly’ housing estate
Housing Minister, Dr Roodal Moonilal has described the Housing Development Corporation’s (HDC), Fairfield Housing Community as the first “farmer friendly” housing estate, which would include warehousing and vendor facilities, as well as housing units at the estate.
Speaking with reporters during a tour of the housing project at Mathilda Trace, Princes Town yesterday, Moonilal recalled when he had first toured the project’s site just over two years ago, a number of farmers organisations had expressed concern about the land being used for housing, and not agricultural purposes.
“At that time, I made a commitment that the HDC would work with the farmers and the Member of Parliament, Nela Khan, to ensure that we arrive at a consensus in terms of the land use, and I am happy to announce that we have arrived at a consensus, in that the farming community here will be allocated space for wholesaling their produce,” Moonilal said, adding warehouses had been constructed for the farming community.
“This will be the most unique HDC type in Trinidad and Tobago, because it will be an HDC estate that is farmer friendly. We are building here, facilities for farmers, including warehousing facility, and we are building as well, vending facility for members of the community, so it will be a farmers cooperative HDC estate,” he added.
Moonilal said approximately 115 farmers had been relocated, but noted that “they have not been disadvantaged, and farmers are happy, and the HDC and housing are happy.” ..READ MORE
