Threats to safety and security are becoming a major issue in the Edinburgh 500 area in Central Trinidad and this is why the Minister of the People turned the spotlight on the community’s Recreation Ground through his Direct Delivery Programme.
Dr. Glenn Ramadharsingh brought T&TEC representatives to the area to ensure that the grounds are well lit, thereby providing a safer environment for more constructive activities.
It comes after several recent instances of young women being brutally raped in the Edinburgh 500 community.
This is according to information that has been brought to the Minister of the people’s attention since, as he pointed out, crimes of this nature often go unreported because of fears of stigmatisation.
Dr. Ramadharsingh is lobbying with the Ministry of National Security for police and army patrols and next Thursday, he has arranged for a security seminar in the area.
“We have heard the pain and the hurt of the female community having to walk through areas. That’s why T&TEC is here today, to put up the lights. But the lights are not enough. What we need to do is govern certain parts of the district and that must be done by someone in a booth, who will be there all night.”
With the help of T&TEC, he is literally lighting up the recreation ground so that residents feel more secure.
“The same symbol I wear today is the same symbol that I wore when I asked for that trust. I am not a defector. I am an effecter of change and I have brought the T&TEC to light up Edinburgh 500 today like never before. From tomorrow morning we breaking ground and putting up poles. Let there be light in Edinburgh 500 and let it begin with me and you and we.”
An MTS booth was also on site, as the Minister encouraged the many young people present to get involved.
He delivered to the elderly as well by announcing an expanded route for the PTSC Eldamo service.
He said it is all a testament to his commitment to service.
“It have show horse and work horse. Today, you have no show horse here, it’s work horse.”
