A safer place to live
The Editor:
Crime is a worldwide issue that legislators try to fight and find ways to prevent. Now more than ever you can hear the outcry in our own land for something drastic to be done about the crime situation. People are scared and more than a little concerned about their lives. In the past, health was the number one concern. Nowadays, people in T&T place the need for a safer place to live as higher priority for themselves and loved ones.
Crime continues not only affects the average citizen but is also a major problem for the business sector. Businessmen and prominent citizens are even higher targets. The reality is that even though police and prisons do exist most of the big fishes are outside swimming free. It is also important to note that crime generates substantial costs to society at individual, community, and national levels.
In the United States alone, more than 23 million criminal offenses were committed in 2007, resulting in approximately $15 billion in economic losses to the victims and $179 billion in government expenditures on police protection, judicial and legal activities, and corrections. With such a statistic, it’s strange that this problem has been left to spiral out of control since the 2003. The present administration is left with a daunting task because of this.
The recent review of legislations which include The Bail (Amendment) Bill 2013, The Cybercrime Bill 2014, The Indictable Offences (Committal Proceedings) Bill 2014 led by the Attorney General are all steps in making our country a safer place.
With all this being said, we need to apprehend criminals by drastically increase our detection rate and convicting them. If not, may god help us all!
