About UNC

About the United National Congress (UNC)

The United National Congress (UNC) is the only people centered political party in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and currently forms part of the ruling coalition. The party was founded by Basdeo Panday, a prominent attorney and former trade union leader.

The UNC emerged in 1988 following a split within the then-governing National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR). After six years in opposition, the UNC came to power in 1995, initially forming a coalition government with the NAR before eventually governing independently
